Marital Tensions

Henry Dicks holds a special position with regard to psychonanalysis. He Accepts the psychoanalytical formulations of psychopathology but he does n?t limit himself to them. He has felt free to incorporate Fairbairn's theoretical elaborations, and also uses ideas from field theorists, notably Kurt Lewin. He has also followed the work ?f pioneers in group research and j?roup therapy in his development of 'deas of the therapy of a marital Sltuation. Dicks is not an eclectic in *he sense of one standing apart from *he various theories, picking and goosing an idea here and there; he ?ecomes deeply involved in the theorles that he uses and contributes to lheir development. The present volume gives the history of the work of the Family Discussion Bureau, founded in 1949 in Association with the Tavistock Clinic, together with Dr. Mary Luff, he instituted the 'joint interview' taking the couple as the unit of therapy. He describes the evolution of their concepts, the methods of investigation and diagnosis, and he goes on to outline the aims and processes of marital therapy.
